Taipei, Day 1 — Connecting Through Space, Design, and Dialogue
Our first day in Taipei began with a visit to the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association, where we had the privilege of meeting with the Deputy Representative. This valuable opportunity was made possible through an introduction by a trusted Taiwanese friend and business partner to whom we extend our sincere thanks.
During the meeting, when the CEO of the Japanese developper of high-altitude manned balloons began sharing insights into near-space exploration, the room quickly filled with curiosity. Questions flowed naturally as everyone leaned in, eager to learn more about this fascinating frontier.
Following this engaging exchange, we visited the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), located in a beautifully renovated former tobacco factory that retains a strong sense of nostalgia. The leadership team at TDRI welcomed us with exceptional warmth, creating an open and friendly atmosphere for meaningful discussion.
At TDRI, we were reminded that innovation is not always about replacing the “old” with the “new.” Some of the most compelling ideas emerge from preserving the spirit of the past while reinterpreting it through thoughtful design. Their philosophy resonated deeply with us as we explored various examples of this approach.
The humor and kindness of the TDRI team filled the visit with smiles and positive energy. One particularly memorable space was the library, housed in a former bathhouse within the tobacco factory—a place that beautifully blended history and creativity. Another highlight was a uniquely designed discussion space, where even serious conversations felt joyful and inspiring.
This experience reaffirmed the powerful role that space and environment play in shaping emotions, stimulating creativity, and fostering collaboration. TDRI has already begun partnerships with Japanese universities, and we are excited about the potential to further strengthen ties with Hokkaido and Sapporo.
Looking ahead, we hope to create more opportunities where design, dialogue, and space come together to bring out the best ideas—and the brightest smiles.
